NOMINATED FOR BEST PERFORMER (KEITH SINGLETON) AT THE 2024 UK THEATRE AWARDS.

In a totalitarian state, a Writer is questioned by the authorities about a spate of murders that bear similarities to her short stories. Is this life imitating art or something more sinister?

This black comedy, widely regarded as one of the greatest plays of the past 25 years, examines the role of the artist in society and asks what price we pay for freedom of expression.

Building on the overwhelming success of our 2023 co-production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane, we will once again partner with the Lyric Theatre to bring one of Martin McDonagh’s most celebrated and critically acclaimed plays to Belfast audiences.

“The soul of the play is domestic and profoundly beautiful in its evacuation of two utterly damaged siblings navigating a world that they can’t understand and in which their trauma cannot ever be understood. The ‘totalitarian state’ in which the play is set can be read as both literal and figurative - fascism is a regime but it is also a state of mind. Unfortunately, those who exist in the spaces between the black and white are, and have always been, the first in the firing line Time in Memoriam.” - EMMA JORDAN, DIRECTOR

Described by critics as “a masterpiece of black comedy” and “wickedly funny” The Pillowman is a fantastic opportunity for Belfast audiences to see a world-class piece of theatre featuring a cast and creative team of some of Belfast’s finest theatre professionals.

REVIEWS

The final moments of the play are moving and heartbreaking, concluding a story that will stay with you long after you have left the theatre. While the dark themes of brutality, child abuse and murder are not for the faint-hearted, what stands strong in The Pillowman is the tenderness and heartache of the lengths someone would go to protect what they love.”

“Sharply pertinent”

“Emma Jordan’s masterful direction richly mines the dark material, takes total control of the mood (aided by Carl Kennedy’s sinister sound design), and lifts the actors’ performances to fully convey this troubling tale.”
