Congratulations to Emma Jordan on prestigious award

The Arts Council today congratulated Emma Jordan, Artistic Director of Prime Cut Productions in Belfast, who has been awarded the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Foundation Breakthrough Award.

The £295,000 award, set up to support exceptional entrepreneurs in the cultural sector in the UK, will allow Emma to develop her work as a theatre director. She will be able to pursue new international collaborations and will lead a series of development opportunities for emerging theatre-makers in Northern Ireland.

Receiving the award, Emma said: “I am thrilled to be awarded the Breakthrough Fund. The award will have a huge impact for my own personal development and for the emerging theatre artists and companies who I will be able to support through the fund. The Paul Hamlyn Foundation is a visionary Foundation and I really look forward to working with them in the coming years.”

Noirin McKinney, Arts Development Director at the Arts Council, said: “The Arts Council wholeheartedly congratulates Emma on this award. It is a well-deserved recognition of an exceptional director and an exceptional theatre company. The award highlights the quality of the artistic talent we have here in Northern Ireland. It will create a tremendous opportunity for Emma to help bring on more emerging local talent and for Prime Cut Productions to take their work to new heights of international attention.”

The Breakthrough Award will also support Emma’s work as Artistic Director of Prime Cut Productions, one of Ireland’s leading independent theatre companies, noted for dealing with thought-provoking theatre about the pressing issues of our time. The company has premiered over 32 critically-acclaimed plays from countries as diverse as France, Canada, Chile, South Africa and the USA, as well as outstanding work from the UK and Ireland. Emma’s Breakthrough grant will now allow Prime Cut to capitalise on its international relationships and tour more of its work to international audiences.
Emma’s most recent artistic success came with Prime Cut’s acclaimed collaboration with Bosnian theatre director Haris Pašovič, which resulted in the creation and production of ‘The Conquest of Happiness’ for Derry~Londonderry UK City of Culture 2013. This ambitious, large-scale production went on to tour to Belfast, Ljubljana, Sarajevo, and Mostar in co-production with Pašovič’s East West Theatre Company.
