Paris, 1794, and a ransacked Palais de Luxembourg is home to a prisoner as infamous as the Revolution itself. The authorities, fearful of a rescue attempt, have planted a decoy to confuse his supporters, for in less than twenty four hours the Revolution will turn against one of its most celebrated protagonists and execute George Jacques Danton. Henry is the prisoner's warder, the "first fruiting" of the revolution and the last hope of it's fading hero. Can he be turned to his purpose and help Danton outwit the destiny that awaits him?
Who Shall be Happy is a powerful foray into the past and into the mind of a character who is talking urgently and clearly to the present.
Stanley Townsend - Winner TMA Best Actor Award for Who Shall Be Happpy..?

"In 1995, Mad Cow approached the English playwright Trevor Griffiths with the proposal that he adapt his television drama "Hope in the year Two" for the stage. Centred around the last few days of Danton's life, its internal dialogue questioned the process and the price of revolutionary change and looked both to the future and the past in its quest for a solution. "Who shall be happy if not everyone?" was the driving philosphical force of the piece. Produced during the Belfast Festival 1995, the production was revived in 1996 enjoying a residency at the Bush Theatre, London and touring to the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds, The Project Arts Centre, Dublin and the Kelterne Festival in Arhus, Denmark." Jackie Doyle, Artistic Director |
